1915 Old Town HW model with Sponsons
Construction began on this closed gunwale canoe during September 1915 and it was shipped to William Read & Sons, a large outfitter, in Boston, MA on April 21, 1917. The HW model was designed to be more stable in rough water and high winds than the Charles River. Interestingly, with the early HWs the end profiles were upswept nearly to the extent of Charles River although this canoe had a slightly rounder floor for greater stability and tracking. The addition of sponsons as a factory option enhanced it’s stability to the point where this canoe is essentially unable to be tipped.
